“I joined the boating club because I wanted to get on the water outside of sailing and not have the additional responsibilities of the boat beyond taking it out.
The instructor was great and he was able to custom fit to my level of experience. I enjoy the ability to get on the bay easily almost anytime and the access to boats has been great.
Sam has been awesome to work with! I’m really enjoying the club. It’s a totally awesome way to get on the water and try a variety of powerboats!” -Obadiah O.

The instructors were great! They were easy to work with and learn from.
I am happy with the program so far. I have already taken a couple of family friends who are interested in boating to give them the first hand experience if they would like to join.

FAQ - Frequently Asked Questions
A boat club is a membership-based alternative to owning a boat. Instead of purchasing a vessel, members pay an initiation fee and monthly dues in exchange for access to a shared fleet of maintained, insured, and ready-to-use boats. Members reserve boats online, show up at the dock, and go — without worrying about maintenance, storage, fuel management, or servicing. Most clubs offer multiple membership tiers based on how frequently a member wants to boat.
The key difference between a boat club and a rental company is the private membership experience. Boat clubs typically include training, personalized support, and a consistent fleet of boats members get to know over time.
At the Nautical Access Club on San Francisco Bay, every membership includes private one-on-one training, concierge-level support, and access to a fleet of enclosed-cabin powerboats that are fueled, maintained, and ready at the dock. Members reserve online 24 hours a day and can be on the Bay with as little as a few hours notice.
Yes, and most boat club members start with little or no experience. Learning to operate a powerboat is far more accessible than most people expect. The fundamentals — throttle control, steering, docking, navigation rules, and safety can be learned quickly with proper one-on-one instruction on the water. Most beginners feel comfortable and confident within their first few sessions.
The most effective way to learn is private instruction on the specific boats you’ll be using, in the actual conditions you’ll be boating in. Group classes and online courses build knowledge, but real confidence comes from hands-on time on the water with an experienced instructor beside you.
At the Nautical Access Club, every membership includes private one-on-one training on San Francisco Bay — on our boats, in real Bay conditions. We take complete beginners to independent skipper status, guaranteed. Families and partners can train together or separately so everyone on board is comfortable and capable.
The time it takes to learn to operate a powerboat depends on three things: the quality of instruction, how often you practice, and the conditions you’re learning in. Most people with no prior experience can handle basic boat operation — starting, steering, throttle control, and maneuvering — within a few hours on the water. Docking, which requires the most finesse, typically takes a few sessions to feel natural.
With consistent private instruction, most beginners reach independent, confident skipper status within two to four sessions. Learning in a group setting or without structured instruction takes considerably longer.
At the Nautical Access Club, our private instruction is paced entirely around you. Some members are ready to go solo quickly. Others prefer more time, and that’s completely fine. We don’t clear you to go out independently until you feel confident — and we do too. There’s no test, no deadline, and no pressure.
Joining a boat club typically involves three steps: choosing a membership level, paying an initiation fee, and completing any required training before your first independent outing. Most clubs have an online inquiry or application process, followed by an orientation or onboarding session.
Before committing, it’s worth asking what’s actually included in the membership — specifically whether training is included, what the initiation fee covers, and whether there are additional costs for fuel, maintenance, or equipment.
At the Nautical Access Club, getting started is straightforward. Download our membership brochure to review the three membership levels and current rates. If you have questions, contact us directly — we’ll walk you through everything and help you find the right fit. When you’re ready, we schedule your training and you’re on the water.
Not usually. Some boat clubs offer trial days or an introductory experience to let prospective members get a feel for the fleet and the experience before committing. These vary widely. Some are free, some are fee-based, and the level of instruction and support included differs significantly between clubs.
What matters most is whether the introductory experience reflects what actual membership feels like – the boats, the support, the training, and the service.
The Nautical Access Club’s Starter Membership is designed specifically as a low-commitment entry point for people who want to begin boating without overcommitting to time or cost. It includes full private training, access to our enclosed-cabin fleet on San Francisco Bay, and enough boating days to get comfortable on the water and decide how boating fits your life. It’s the most supported, highest-quality way to start.
Boat club costs vary significantly depending on location, fleet quality, and what’s included. Most clubs charge a one-time initiation fee — which can range from under $1,000 to several thousand dollars — plus monthly dues. Some clubs charge separately for fuel, training, or additional services.
When comparing costs, the most important question is what’s included. A lower monthly fee that doesn’t include training, fuel, or personalized support can end up costing more — and delivering far less — than a membership that covers everything from day one.
At the Nautical Access Club, membership includes private training, concierge-level support, and all maintenance and servicing — there are no surprise costs on top of your dues. Download our brochure for current membership rates and initiation details across our three membership levels: Starter, Active, and Lifestyle.
San Francisco Bay is one of the premier boating destinations in the world — and one of the most underserved when it comes to accessible, high-quality private boating options. Most boat rentals on the Bay are basic, unstructured, and offer little to no instruction. Private boat clubs with full training, maintained fleets, and personalized support are rare.
The Nautical Access Club is the only private powerboat club on San Francisco Bay that includes private one-on-one instruction, concierge-level support, and a fleet of enclosed-cabin boats built specifically for Bay conditions. We operate across multiple East Bay locations including Jack London Square in Oakland, Point Richmond, Sausalito, and Emeryville – making us accessible from across the Bay Area.
