Private Boating Lessons

Powerboat Lessons and Sailing Lessons On San Francisco Bay

Learn to boat through private, hands-on instruction.  Lessons designed around how you learn and where you want boating to take you.

Most of our students begin with little or no boating experience.

Some want to learn before buying a boat. Some want to feel confident chartering while they travel. Others are simply curious and want to discover whether boating could become part of their lives.

You do not need to know exactly where boating will take you before you begin.

We start by learning about your experience, interests, and goals. Then we recommend a practical path that may include online learning, private instruction on the water, and additional practice as your skills develop.

You will learn by doing, with an instructor beside you to explain each step, answer questions, and help you build the skills needed to operate a boat safely and confidently.

Whether your goal is to enjoy a day on the Bay, operate your own boat, or prepare for future charters, we will help you begin in the right place and move forward at a pace that makes sense for you.

Applied Boating Mastery: Efficient, Intelligent Learning

Applied Boating Mastery means learning more than the steps required to operate a boat. You learn how to apply those skills in real conditions, make sound decisions, and become increasingly capable without depending on an instructor beside you.

Step 1: Learn the Theory as You Go

There are no classroom lectures during your private lessons. Your lesson time is spent on the water, where you can see, practice, and apply what you are learning.

You receive 24/7 access to multimedia online coursework covering boating systems, safety, navigation, and the rules of the road. You can complete relevant modules before your lessons, continue them as your training progresses, and return to them whenever you need a refresher.

The coursework uses retrieval practice, an evidence-based learning method that helps strengthen understanding and recall by asking you to actively use what you have learned.

Step 2: Practice With Private Coaching

Meet your private instructor and begin operating the boat from your first lesson.

You receive immediate feedback, focused practice, and the opportunity to repeat essential maneuvers until they become familiar and reliable. Your instructor adjusts the pace and progression around your experience, questions, and boating goals.

You are not simply shown what to do. You learn to understand what the boat is doing, why a maneuver works, and how to make useful adjustments when conditions change.

Step 3: Apply Your Skills in Real Conditions

San Francisco Bay becomes your training ground. You learn to work with wind, current, traffic, changing conditions, and the practical decisions that cannot be fully taught through a screen or textbook.

As your abilities develop, you take greater responsibility for preparing the boat, navigating, communicating with your crew, and making decisions at the helm.

Step 4: Build Toward Independent Boating

Whether you want to take your family out on the Bay, operate your own boat, or prepare to charter while traveling, your training is shaped around what you want to be able to do.

The goal is not simply to complete a course. It is to become a safe, capable boater who can apply what you have learned with sound judgment and increasing independence.

What Students Say

“I went from terrified of docking to confidently handling a boat even in the wind. The online prep made such a difference. It seemed a lot to learn, but doing this helped me actually understand what I was doing before I even stepped on board.”
Sarah M., San Francisco

“Best investment I made. The private coaching allowed me to learn at my own pace. I wasn’t nervous about holding people up or feeling frustrated while waiting on others. Now I take my family out and feel safe and comfortable.”
David L., Sausalito

“After years of thinking about learning to boat, I finally did it. The method worked for me!  I felt prepared, supported, and capable from day one.”
Jennifer K., Oakland

“I learned more in 6 hours with Passage Nautical than I did in 6 months at my old school.”
Mark H., Oakland

The Group Lesson Comparison

Minimal Time at the Helm: You may pay for a full day of instruction, but only spend a fraction of that time actually operating the boat. The rest is spent watching other students take their turns.

You Move at the Group’s Pace: The course can only move as quickly as the group. If another student needs more time with a maneuver, everyone waits. If you need more time, the schedule may move on before the skill feels solid.

Exposure Is Not the Same as Learning: Boating skills require repetition, feedback, and time to connect the theory with what the boat is actually doing. Trying to absorb everything in a crowded weekend course can leave you familiar with the material without being able to apply it reliably.

The Real Cost: The initial price may be lower, but many students finish without feeling ready to dock, maneuver in close quarters, or operate independently. They sign up for another course, then another, and often spend more time and money before seeking the focused private training they needed from the beginning.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Do I need prior experience to take private boating lessons? A: No. Our private coaching is perfect for complete beginners. Because the lessons are 1:1, we tailor the pace to your starting point. Whether you are looking for beginner sailing lessons or introductory powerboat training, we build your confidence from Day 1.

Q: Do you offer certification? A: Yes. Passage Nautical is a premier training center. You’ll earn NauticEd certifications and International SLC and SLC-P certifications. Unlike schools that focus only on the paper, we focus on the competence required to actually use the license to charter boats in the Mediterranean or Caribbean.

Q: Where do the lessons take place? A: Lessons launch from either of our locations,  Pt. Richmond or Jack London Square in Oakland, providing immediate access to the best training grounds on San Francisco Bay. You will learn in real-world conditions, navigating currents and winds that will prepare you for boating anywhere in the world.

Q: Can I switch between sailboat and powerboat lessons? A: Absolutely. Many of our students want to be “bi-lingual” boaters. Since we offer both private sailing lessons and private powerboat lessons, you can customize a training plan that covers both disciplines using our flexible scheduling.
