A practical introduction to boating or focused skill building for returning boaters.
This course is designed for complete beginners who want to get behind the wheel, experience boating firsthand, and decide whether they want to continue into a longer training program.
It is also a good fit for experienced boaters returning after time away or anyone who wants focused coaching in a specific area.
During the two lessons, you may work on:
- Basic steering and throttle control
- Understanding how the boat responds to wind, current, and waves
- Slow-speed maneuvering
- Close-quarters handling

By the end of the course, beginners will have a realistic understanding of what it feels like to operate a powerboat and whether boating is something they want to pursue. Returning boaters will leave with refreshed skills, greater comfort, and a clearer plan for what to work on next.
Boat Handling Essentials
3 Days | 12 Hours on the Water
A solid foundation for operating a small powerboat safely and becoming a more capable person on board.
This course is designed for beginners who want more than an introduction and are ready to build practical boat-handling skills over three private lessons.
It is also a good fit for experienced boaters returning after a long absence or anyone who wants to rebuild confidence and strengthen essential skills.
During the three lessons, you may work on:
- Steering, throttle control, and boat response
- Slow-speed maneuvering
- Holding position and managing momentum
- Basic docking and departure procedures
- Understanding wind, current, and changing conditions

Returning boaters will leave with refreshed skills, improved control, and a clearer understanding of what additional training they may need.
Bay Boat Handling
4 Days | 16 Hours on the Water
A deeper practical foundation for handling a small powerboat in the changing conditions of San Francisco Bay.
This course is designed for beginners who want to move beyond the basics, become a capable crew member, and develop the skills to operate with experienced people on board.
It is also a good fit for returning boaters who need more time to rebuild confidence, improve control, and strengthen important boat-handling skills.
During the four lessons, you may work on:
- Steering, throttle control, and boat response
- Slow-speed and close-quarters maneuvering
- Docking, departing, and holding position
- Managing momentum in wind and current
- Basic navigation and situational awareness
- Crew communication, lookout, and onboard decision-making
By the end of the course, beginners should be able to handle a small powerboat with greater confidence, perform basic maneuvers more consistently, and operate with experienced crew support. Returning boaters will leave with stronger control, refreshed skills, and greater comfort handling the boat in typical Bay conditions.
Advanced Boat Handling
5 Days | 20 Hours on the Water
A comprehensive private training program for developing the judgment and control needed to operate a small powerboat with crew.
This course is designed for beginners who are ready to build a broader range of practical skills and become more self-reliant at the helm.
It is also a good fit for experienced boaters returning after a long absence, moving up to larger boats, or preparing for additional competency assessments such as the International Certificate of Competence.
During the five lessons, you may work on:
- Precision steering, throttle control, and boat placement
- Docking and departing in more demanding conditions
- Close-quarters maneuvering and holding position
- Managing wind, current, wakes, and heavier Bay conditions
- Navigation, route planning, and situational awareness
- Crew leadership, communication, and onboard decision-making
By the end of the course, beginners should be able to operate a small powerboat with greater independence when supported by capable crew, handle a wider range of Bay conditions, and make sound decisions with less instructor guidance. Returning boaters will leave with stronger control, greater confidence, and a solid foundation for larger boats or further certification.
“The private lessons were worth every penny. I learned more in 8 hours than friends who have been taking multiple weekend courses. They are so impressed with my skills that now I’m the one teaching them!”
Lisa T., Mill Valley
What Students Say
“I thought powerboating would be intimidating, but my instructor made it fun and approachable. Within three sessions, I was docking and handling the boat solo, and I wasn’t nervous!”
Michael R., San Francisco
The combination of the online learning and the private lessons worked perfectly for me. I could go through the online courses whenever I had time, then go back and review them as I needed. The boats were spotless, well maintained, and equipped with everything. The whole experience felt first-class.
Karen S., San Rafael
I was surprised by how calm the instructors were. Even when I made mistakes, there was never any pressure or criticism. They explained things clearly, let me figure it out at the helm. By the end of the lessons, I wasn’t just driving the boat, I actually felt calm and confident doing it.
David M., Walnut Creek

Powerboat Lessons on San Francisco Bay: FAQs
Yes. Passage Nautical provides private, on-the-water powerboat instruction on San Francisco Bay for beginners, returning boaters, boat owners, and people preparing to charter. Lessons are taught by experienced instructors and customized around the student’s goals and current skill level.
As of January 1, 2025, all motorized vessel operators on California waterways must carry a California Boater Card (CBC), regardless of age. Our powerboat courses are specifically designed to help you gain the competence needed to earn this certification.
Traditional schools offer group lessons only where you share a class with 3 other students and only spend about 25% of course time driving. Passage Nautical uses a private coaching model where you get 100% of the class time behind the helm where learning happens, allowing you to master docking, navigation, and safety with total confidence at your own pace.
Additionally, our innovative, online self-paced theory courses increase your retention rate to over 70% compared to lecture courses in group classes with a 15% retention rate.
Training time depends on prior experience, the type and size of boat, the skills you want to develop, and whether your goal is introductory experience, independent operation, boat-owner training, or charter preparation. Lessons are taught in four-hour sessions, and days do not need to be consecutive. We begin with a boating experience survey and recommend a practical starting point.
