Sea Changes Retreat – Where The Mind and Nature Meet

Join us for the ultimate fusion of Vedic meditation and sailing to revitalize your mind, body, and spirit! This is not your ordinary day retreat; it’s a playful, serene, educational, and fun-filled day escape that’s perfect for a group of friends, a couple’s refresh, or a rejuvenating solo adventure.

For anyone stressed out, overworked, and spending too much time indoors, we’re combining two powerful and potent tools to remove your stress and give you tools to use at home for daily renewal. The benefits of our day retreat are like taking a week’s vacation.

Who’s This For?

It’s a stressful time in the world, and we all need to feel grounded and connected and have tools that help us manage daily challenges and today’s frantic pace. Many people want to have a meditation practice but struggle with starting or maintaining one. There is so much information out there about meditation but no easy way to learn how to cultivate a practice or which one is suitable for you.

If your take on meditation is, “I can’t meditate. My brain is too active!” or “I can’t sit still”, or if you’re a struggling meditator and need a practice that allows you more peace and success, join us, Vedic meditation is the method for you.

The Benefits You’ll Receive

Our retreat combines the worlds of sailing and meditation which share  many of the same healing qualities.  While meditation is known to break the accumulation of stress and help to restore calm and inner peace, sailing and the water have their own unique healing qualities.   These activities combine to help reduce stress, increase calm, provide a lasting dose of serotonin and dopamine, provide a pathway to better focus, increase mental clarity, and reduce cognitive decline. You will experience this powerful combination in our one-day retreat.

The process of sailing is about embodying the wind. It’s about tuning our senses into nature and adjusting our sails as the wind changes, much like life.

You’ll end your day with us with a greater sense of tranquility and serenity, a deeper connection with nature, a boost of serotonin, the feel good hormone, new friends, and go home with tools to use in your daily life to have more good in your life.

Don’t miss out on this incredible opportunity. Book your spot today and embark on a sea change like no other!

The Details

We’re excited to offer a unique collaboration with Vedic Meditation master James Brown and our sailing experience.  We’ll start with a morning meditation training and experience in our studio. Learn about Vedic meditation, a 5000-year-old practice developed way back then for everyday people to practice meditation. It’s a mantra-based practice that eases you into a meditative state, so there is no struggling with the mind and resistance. It feels natural, simple, and effortless.

We believe that nourishing your soul should also involve nourishing your body. The morning session is followed by a delicious lunch that satisfies both your taste buds and nutritional needs.  We’ll depart the dock after our lunch for an exhilarating afternoon sail on the majestic San Francisco Bay for some eco-therapy on beautiful 40′ sailing yachts for our nature connection and fun with each other.  You can get behind the wheel, pull a few lines, or just bask in the sun.

Upon returning to the dock, we’ll gather again in Studio 23 for our “wine-down” after-sail networking with wine and small bites.

The retreat will be held at our Pt. Richmond workshop space, Studio 23. The hours are from 10:30 to 4:30.

This experience is about connection, self-care and how to bring more joy into your life.  Please join us on this special adventure.

Sailing For A Sea Change

Sailing itself is a sport that naturally takes you out of your head and into your body giving your mind a break from the general stresses of daily life. Your are connected to and in concert with the feel and intensity of the wind, the rhythmic movement of the boat in the waves, and the closeness of the ocean just feet below you. The sighting of a seal or bay dolphin adds to the closeness you feel with nature. You cannot help but feel calmer.

Why are people more naturally happy on or by the sea? Sea air is charged with healthy negative ions. This accelerate our ability to absorb oxygen which helps balance the serotonin on our bodies. Serotonin is known as the “happy hormone” so your mood is naturally altered by just being in the salt air. This explains why after a sailing adventure everyone feels more alert, relaxed and energized.

What Is Vedic Meditation?

Vedic Meditation comes from the Veda, ancient Hindu texts that originated in India over 5000 years ago. It is the foundation from which yoga and Ayurveda began.  It’s termed a “householders” technique which simply means it’s for people like us who have busy lives with jobs, families, relationships, and social commitments.  It’s a simple and powerful practice that everyone can use.

As James describes, “trying’ to meditate is actually what excites the mind and leads to more thinking. Vedic Meditation effortlessly settles the mind and body in the most natural and immediate way.”

Vedic Meditation – How It Differs From Mindfulness Meditation and Transcendental Meditation

If you have trouble sitting still or keeping your mind from racing faster than an Indy 500 car, Vedic meditation is for you. It’s a simple, powerful technique in which you learn how to allow your mind to settle and flow with the present without concentrating or focusing and without trying so hard to control your racing mind.

Vedic meditation practice differs from mindfulness in that a mantra is used as the tool to guide your mind. The mantra helps the mind move away from the chop and waves at the mind’s surface and take a deeper dive into the more peaceful depths of your consciousness.

In mindfulness-based techniques, you’re observing the mind and using methods to bring your mind back to the present moment.  It is more active than the Vedic method and sometimes more difficult when struggling with high stress or anxiety.  With just two 20-minute sessions a day you can achieve remarkable results for your well being.

There is no chanting, focusing, concentrating or contemplating involved – and you don’t have to control the mind in any way. The technique feels natural, simple and effortless because you never have to ‘try’ to meditate.”

Transcendental meditation (TM) is a type of silent mantra meditation also. It was introduced in the late 1950’s by Maharishi Mahesh Yogi.  TM is similar to Vedic meditation in that it is an effortless and straightforward form of meditation that allows people to experience a state of relaxed mindfulness by helping them avoid unnecessary thoughts. Vedic meditaion is thousands of years old.

The biggest difference between Vedic meditation and the TM technique can only be taught by certified TM teachers and is relatively new.  It is a branded and trademarked form of Vedic meditation that Maharishi Mahesh Yogi popularized during the 1960s. Vedic meditation is taught by independent teachers and isn’t so caught up in the convictions of an organized structure.  There are no fixed rules and can even be self-taught.

An Ocean Of Consciousness

An often-used analogy for the mind is the ocean, and for very good reason, (and not just that 65% of our body is water).  The ocean surface, like the mind, is never entirely still.  While the ocean is at the constant effect of the wind and weather conditions around it,  the mind races along, processing over 70,000 thoughts per day.

When the winds of change start to blow, ocean waves become more turbulent, and like our minds, when unexpected changes occur, and situations become outside of our control, our minds race, anxiety climbs, and we can end up in moods that sometimes don’t feel very productive or kind.  The more attention and emotional energy we give the turbulent thoughts, the more power they have to toss us from the present moment and calm to what can feel like a great storm of emotions.

But what happens when we dive deeper into the ocean below the waves? We arrive at a place that is calmer and quieter.  The tossing waves above have not disappeared, but the space beneath the surface is unaffected by the constant changes.  This is the mind in meditation where we access a deeper level of awareness, a space of stillness within where we can observe the storm of thoughts at the surface of the mind and access deeper feelings of peace.

Taming The Waves

When the winds of stress blow, we try all kinds of ways to change the water – we do more, try to control more, and micro-manage, but no matter how much we fight against change, it doesn’t increase our well-being.  Increasing our grasping for control leads us further off course.

The problem does not lie with the water, but in how we manage the waves’ effect on our mind and how we navigate them. This is when having a simple meditation practice provides us with helpful tools and techniques to bring ourselves back to calm and clarity.

Studio 23 is our event room, where we create the space for our meditation and other Sailing experiences.
